This book is designed to help improve the readers knowledge of the electrical systems used on todays vehicles. Whether you are studying for an Automotive Service Excellence Certification test or learning how to fix your car, the topics covered will improve your chances of success. The book starts off with the basic definitions of electricity and how it is formed then goes into electrical circuits. Ohm's law describes the relationship between Volts, Amps and Resistance. Calculating basic Ohm's law circuits is covered in Chapter 1. This allows the person working on the circuit to understand when things are not right. It also allow them to diagnose if a problem exists, through the use of a Digital Volt Ohm Meter (DVOM), and where the problem could be. Once the reader has a basic understanding on how electrical circuits work it is then time to move onto electrical circuits on the car. The second chapter covers the fundamentals of magnetism and how it is used in our vehicles. The third chapter covers the 12 Volt battery used on most vehicles today. The construction, types operation, maintenance and diagnosis is discussed in the chapter. The forth chapter covers the design, operation, service and diagnosis of the starting system. This includes the starter, wiring and controls. The fifth chapter covers the operation service and diagnosis of the charging system including the alternator, voltage regulator and replacement. The sixth chapter starts off covering the types classification, size determinations and identification of wiring. It covers the symbols used to represent different parts of an electrical circuit in a wiring diagram. The wiring diagram can be used like a roadmap when trying to isolate a problem in an electrical circuit. Light on our vehicle allow the vehicle to be driven safely in all kinds of weather and at night. Turn signals, hazard flashers and brake lights alert other drivers that our vehicle is stopping or turning. When accompanied by daytime running lights, fog lights and high beam headlights this makes driving safer in different driving conditions. Daytime running lights and the high mount third brake lights have measurably reduced collisions by helping drivers identify the cars better. the chapter also explains the best ways to rep[air wiring problems depending on the circuit and it's location. Soldering, shrink tube, weatherpack connectors and butt type connectors are discussed for the repair of the damaged wire. Lastly the chapter covers the diagnosis of lighting circuits. Whether it is a light that doesn't work or that it is not as bright as it should be the diagnostic procedures such as voltage drops are included.
